| Hmm. Why is this funny? There is such a thing as a "relaxation response" that lowers heartbeat, bloodpressure, anxiety etc. The process is the same as Transcendental Meditation, except you repeat words or sounds that have no relevance to religion/s. It's never going to happen, of course, that millions of people use this process to de-stress and de-aggress. But IF they did, it probablay could change the world because it would alter the way individuals feel about their lives -- in the sense that it would lessen their feelings of stress, anxiety and aggressiveness. On a global level, it's the kind of thing that works in theory but would never work in practice. It's too bad, but I don't think it's funny. |

Heh. an ace up his sleeve indeed! He understands the western need for explanation very well. Buddhists quibble about many things and 'details' -- meditation, however, is not one of them. He's really not hiding anything though. That ace is getting waved around, there is not really any subterfuge. He genuinely wants to show that meditation has medical and emotional benefits. Along the way, folks might see some other things. But if all they do is sweep out some cobwebs and 'gunk' out of their psyches, the world is a better place. Besides, James is exactly right.Budhism has always been very mutable. The way is wide and many people can ride in the boat. Folks need to hear what they need to hear. "Clever means" indeed. When I was a Scoutmaster we were taught that the boys wouldn't do it for you, they wouldn't do because it was the 'right thing.' But, they would do it for a blue bead to hang on their lanyard.
