After a number of crashes over the last week we have decided to perform a complete
database sync over the 26th and 27th July weekend. The update will take a total
of 4 to 6 hours and may result in about 30 mins downtime as we take a master
copy of the database. We will try and complete the addition of at least one
new server over the weekend to ease the peak time loads. As always enetation
depends on the support of our users and donations are welcome at what is a rather
costly upgrade time.

One of the oldest slave servers used for enetation (host server 14) has given
significant problems over the last 10 days. We have removed it from service
until an engineer is available to rebuild it. The removal of the server has
created a slightly higher load on the remaining servers but this should not
cause a significant slowdown.
There have been a couple of failures of the comment counter in the last week
caused by what appears to be a suspect chunk of code on the user forum which
has caused the database sync to stop. We will upgrade the forum software this
week.
July 3rd 2003
Network and Hardware upgrades. We have just completed the addition of 5 new
servers to Enetation taking the total to 9 servers. The new machines will be
configured for use over the next week and brought into service during July.
New contracts were signed in June to provide additional bandwidth and routing
to Enetation so we now have 120mbits of connectivity through several major European
Network Access Points including Linx, Manap, Lipex, Lonap in addition to our
international connectivity. In conjunction with this we have also obtained a
larger network block of 1024 IP addresses to provide significant future expansion
capacity.

Downtime
One of the slave database servers has been suffering from intermittent connection
failures over the last week. Identification of the cause of the problem is still
ongoing but as we can now test for the problem we should be in a position to
manage failures more effectively in the short term until a permanent resolution
can be put in place. Typically when the problem occurs it causes the comment
link to disappear on 1 out of 3 connections. As soon as we have a permanent
fix in place we'll issue a notice here.

Enetation now has over 54,000 users but fewer users than ever are donating.
Please donate and support Enetation!
March 25th 2003
Enetation has recently passed the 40,000 user milestone and is now well on the
way to 50,000 users. This week saw our largest ever growth rate with over 1000
new users joining enetation.
Code Upgrades. New experimental code has been added today to include support
for Bold <b> </b> and Italic <i> </i>
tags as well as hyperlinks. We have also resolved some minor issues with code
bugs.
February 17th 2003
Our second major code upgrade was completed today, the new code will be used
automatically for all new user accounts. Over the next week or two we will upgrade
all of the old user accounts to the new code base. Users will not have to make
any changes to their code and there should be no downtime as each account is
upgraded
The Pro system has not yet been upgraded to the new code although we expect
that this will happen over the next few days. Pro upgrades may not be completed
for 48 hours while the migration to the new code takes place.
The servers are still suffering at peak times of the day but we expect that
this will ease as user accounts are upgraded to v2 of the code.
January 9th 2003
We are experiencing very high server loads at peak times during the day which
may prevent some comment links from appearing. Thanks to very generous donations
over December we are in a position to add two servers this weekend to the existing
cluster which should minimise any risk of system overload.
(We were expecting the new servers added in November to be good for 6 months,
but due to the fantastic growth in users it looks like we've managed 6 weeks!)
Please keep donating!

Donations via Credit and Debit card are now possible from here.

We have found that a the comment count settings for blogs
with more than one comment may be corrupt in several users settings. We are
working on a global fix but individual users can fix this themselves by updating
their comment settings themselves.
UPDATE All comment count settings have been reset however the captions that
go with the comment could not be recovered. It looks like a single user has
been able to apply their incorrect comment count caption to every users account.
November 27th 2002
Our first series of server and system upgrades have gone very well. A quick
indication of how effective they are can be found here.

On Friday 15th November Enetation was transferred into the control of Netserve
Consultants Ltd. A full press release is available here

Enetation server swop, so DNS changeover caused 20mins downtime today. Freebie
users back up. Could I ask all users to read the stick topic in the form..
October 29th 2002
Another outage of the service occurred last night as the number of users simply
overwhelmed the servers. The traffic that is hitting the enetation service is
immense. The number of users in the last month has risen amazingly, however
the number of donors remain low. Please read
this forum posting.
October 25th 2002
Server outage took enetation offline for a few hours last night. This has now
been sorted out.
October 16th 2002
General housekeeping scripting updated. Working through the todo list!
September 16th 2002
Big news on enetation. We are now running a donation
drive . With this comes XML outputs, email notification of comments and
other goodies. Click here for more information
on this.
September 10th 2002
Ok all is now running off the new server :)
September 9th 2002
Tonight the full system will go live on the new server (assuming things go to plan) Keep an eye out on this site over the next few days for an important announcement.
September 3rd 2002
The new server is in and configured so I am just ensuring that the DB is working
ok etc. Things should be plain sailing now, however forgive me if its off/busy
in the next day or two - its me ok! I am just fiddling :)
August 27th 2002
Enetation is back up on a lighter code base, so it will now instantly load your
comments or instantly say 'server busy'. There is no more long load times either
way :) The new server is going into the rack shortly, it will be a Athlon 1800,
40gb 7.2K rpm hard drive and will be trying and get 1Gb ram for it (depending
on prices)- that should ensure the Database stays quick. Again can I thank everyone
for their support and positive messages!
August 26th 2002
As you are aware enetation has had some service issues in the last few days.
I have taken the decision to re-code from scratch and purchase better database
oriantated servers (ie. loads of ram!) As a result enetation will resume normal
service at some point next week. It will be back with the speed and reliability
that made you choose this system to provide your commenting.
UPDATE:
Thanks for all the emails, the most comment question is 'Will I loose
all my comments?' the answer is NO all are saved. Once its all back
up and running it will be picking off exactly where we left off :)
August 20th 2002
Update: New code went live at 12:25GMT
A log of this mornings work can be found in the forum here
(please take a look). The user.php has now got a whole new structure to it,
resulting in even greater speed in your weblog commenting. As a result blogs
with enetation commenting will load nice and fast!
August 18th 2002
Two of the enetation servers were bombarded for several hours by
multiple IP's severally restricting server output, such a denial of service
is hoped to be prevented in future with a new packet filtering system and automatic
rerouting of 'geniune' requests. Some users may have experianced slowness in
using enetation during this period (3am-1pm GMT). All is now back to normal,
and we will be back to development (see below) which was interupted! :)
August 17th 2002
We are working on an all new coding for user.php, so that no database
calls need to be made thus resulting in a near transparent load time while using
enetation. Translation: enetation will be faster than ever. We also have some
big developments that we are waiting to deploy, so stay tuned!
August 2nd 2002
Enetation is now fully stable and bug proof for the forseeable future,
negating the need for day by day updates (as below). Due to this I ask any comments,
questions etc should be pointed at the forum. See you there!
July 25th 2002
Database calls within scripts have been optimised, and once user.php
(the bit for the header code) gets sorted it should all go faster than a very
fast thing. Thanks for all the messages, its nice to see an instant improvement
when coding!
The Forums are now open for
all support requests / questions / dev work etc. Please use these to contact
us rather than email - and if you have done something groovy show off your site
and help others out here!
